Roboto has a dual nature. It features a mechanical skeleton and also the forms are largely geometric. At the same time, the font features friendly and open curves. When some grotesks distort their letterforms to force a rigid rhythm, Roboto does not compromise, permitting letters to be settled into their all-natural width.
